Paul: Tranny Hot Mess Leaving Youtube…

…Chris Crocker moving on.

I never religously watched Chris Crocker’s videos or anything, but I am definately sad to see him go. Perhaps it is just time. I love how he takes himself sooooooooooo seriously. I hope he’s right though about going on to bigger things and finally “let [his] tranny ass hair down”. It would be a shame if he didn’t. I know that he has gotten numerous negative comments (and death threats) from people gay and straight, but I think the world needs a Chris Crocker. His new website looks kind of shitty, though, I hope he can get it together before we all lose interest.

Also, if you are sick and want to see Chris having a Britney Spears moment, click here… p.s. DON’T DO IT, IT’S REALLY GROSS!!!!!!!!!!

Jon: Crying, over you…

jonheader.jpg

..my favorite scene from one of my favorite films.

I’m sure most of you have seen the film Mulholland Drive by now, but I just wanted to remind you of this scene, featuring what is for me the most effective use of music in any film ever:

The first time I saw David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive was a rather postmodern experience. I was on an official date (the last pre-Paul one I ever had. It’s been 6.5 years now) of movie and a dinner. We were at a small independant theater in western MA, with maybe 5 other strangers. We both ended up breaking down in tears just like the characters.

It was wierd.

And maybe the most visceral movie going moment I have ever had…

This scene is of course the key to understanding the whole (non-linear) film. It has to do with false representions and fantasy and all this other stuff that is impossible to explain if you haven’t seen the movie. Regardless, I think that Rebekah Del Rio’s spanish version of Roy Orbinson’s hit song is not reliant in cinematic context to be a moving piece of art.

To see Roy Orbinson performing the original English version of this song live in 1972, click below….

Jon: Ok, I’m getting sick of the trash talk….

jonheader.jpg

…I like the campy Batman better! So shut your trap!

With the release of, Dark Knight, the newest film in the long-standing Batman franchise, there has been a lot of talk and comparisons being made in regards to the 90′s films of the same subject matter. While most are in agreement that the first two films (Batman, Batman Returns) are fantastic, almost everyone with a soapbox to preach from has been talking some serious shit about the third (Batman Forever) and fourth (Batman and Robin) films.

What the fuck? I mean, seriously, I love these films… Not everyone wants a serious, dark, brooding  Batman. I prefer my caped crusader campy and fabulous! Here are just a couple of the countless reasons why faggy Batman kicks prozacy/gothy/straight Batman’s ass:

1.) Cheesy one liners and choreography:

This video was originally created (most likely by a boring nerdy straight guy) to make a case for why Batman and Robin was the worst movie ever. Apparently this guy has never heard of camp. Just look at those crotch/ass shots and ridiculous oneliners! What is not to love?

2.) Faggy super hero fetish wear anyone?

In case you were not already doing so, I want you to take a good hard look at Chris O’Donnell’s (Robin’s) crotch. Any fag will tell you: that fucker is packing heat. And when it comes to movies, I think crotchy actors is something we can all collectively get behind.

3.) Strong, fashionable, faggette ladies:

Are they queer or just “queer friendly”? Who knows! One thing that is for sure though: these volumized hair having, spandex wearing, ass kicking ladies are a camp lovers wet dream!

In conclusion:

Old Batman is faggy and awesome!

New Batman is boring and hates the gays.

The End.

Jon: The Return of photographer Liz Wolfe…

jonheader.jpg

Long time Gaycondo readers may remember this post  or this other one I did about Canadian photographer Liz Wolfe. She has been one of my favorite’s to watch for the past couple of years, but it has been kind of a bummer lately because she has not not updated her website with new work in ages.

Lucky for us, today she finally did! Not only did she add 14 new images (including the two featured below), she also built an online store which she has been talking about doing for years. The store has two different sets of ten 6X8 images for sale for a measley $100. That is only $10 per image people!

The groups are divided into two common themes in Wolfe’s work: Sugar and Creatures. These are open editions, but I would still pounce on these amazing opportunities to own Wolfe’s original art at a fraction of her normal gallery prices. Based on my experience with the last time she tried her hand at an online store (I bought some pieces from her and then *poof* the store was gone a week later. I was lucky with my timing.) this venture may be over any day now.

KEEP IT ON THE BROWNLOWE: incredible Thom Yorke painting video

In the weeks prior to me seeing Radiohead for the first time I have been watching documentaries about their legacy. Searching for more on Youtube I have happened upon this incredible digital drawing a fan has done of Thom Yorke. I have also been very amazed by people who use digital drawing techniques as their medium – I have always found it quite disorienting to try and draw upon digital pad whilst looking up at a screen. I just love how creative people (ie. Radiohead) can inspire others to be creative, continuing the artistic circle of creation.

Anyways, watch this artistic video done by the talented Nico Di Mattia.

Jon: The “Pop” art of William Lamson…

jonheader.jpg

sorry, that was a dumb pun…..

Multimedia artist William Lamson has created a new body of work titled Actions that is at once visually stimulating and oddly calming simultaneously. Each short video piece invloves the artist finding new and often unexpected ways to manipulate and (usually) destroy groups of black balloons. Watching the videos in Actions creates a wierd state of trance that is hard to explain. You just have to check it out! Go to his website to view the whole collection, you will love it!

Paul: R.I.P. Estelle Getty

…thank you for being a friend

The Golden Girl/Geriatric Firercracker passed away today at the age of 84. She will be missed. I am really going to miss her when I see Golden Girls reruns on Lifetime, especially since it’s one of the few cable channels we get with our extra-basic cheapo package. She was also in several comedies including Mannequin and Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot.

One of my favorite memories related to her was back when me and Jon first met. He stole a poster of her from the University of Massachusetts Health Center that was captioned “Knock out the flu with Estelle Getty”. It had a picture of her in a boxer’s pose wearing a hoody and sweatbands and was supposed to get people to get their flu shot. I couldn’t find this anywhere on the internet, so instead check out this remix of a senior workout video she did back in 1993.

Jon: Do those heels come in a size 15?

jonheader.jpg

I was reading the new issue of Bust magazine last night, and they had a small article about an organization called Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. The group sets up one mile marches in different cities all over the country to raise awareness about sexual and domestic violence. What sets these marches apart from similiar efforts is that they have found a symbolic, humorous, and smart way to help people to open up a dialogue about a difficult subject. Each march is made up of men who wear high heel shoes for the entirety of the walk. This is obviously not physically easy for most of these men (since most have never walked in heels before, and are most likely wearing shoes that don’t actually fit) and I think it is a really endearingly symbolic way to show support for the women in their lives.

Their website does not seem to have any marches listed for Portland yet, but if you could all keep your eyes peeled for a women’s size 15 pair of modest pumps, let me know. I figure I should start looking now so I am ready when a walk does get set up in my city.

16.) “Freddy likes to climb Grandma’s big tree. He might fall and hurt himself. Get down Freddy!”

17.) “Freddy was told that the sign said that he could not go swimming in the lake. He knows that he should do what the sign says.”

KEEP IT ON THE BROWNLOWE: 90′s Nickelodean Nostalgia

I feel sorry for kids growing up in this generation…Mostly because of the lack of great kids shows that have nearly been erased from the consciousness of many.

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to have Nickelodean. Back in the day, there were some really great TV shows. Remember, Double Dare, a show hosted by Mark Summers which was basically families completing for ridiculous luxury items by going through obstacles ridden with goo? Or the American-Gladiators for kids extreme competition, Guts? Tell me, does anyone out there remember Hey Dude?

As I watched Clarissa Explains It All circa 3rd grade, I thought it must be sooooo cool to be a teenager. Talk about 90′s fashion taken a bit too far!

I was also quite fond of Salute Your Shorts, a show about kids at Camp Anawana and all the crazy shit they try to pull to escape the boredom of summer camp.

However, my favorite show by far was definitely the late night (ahem, 9:30pm) suspense/horror show, Are You Afraid Of The Dark? For those who didn’t have cable back then, this show starts off with young teenagers congregating around a campfire in the woods to tell a spooky story. To this day, I get chills about some of the stories that were told. Some that stick out in my mind are the paranormal Super Specs that allow you to see into another dimension (and its faceless inhabitants which are creepy people dressed all in black), or one about a family that stays in an old vintage house that is covered in mirrors that steal their youth so that it’s creepy owner can stay young forever.

Surprisingly, many of the early 90′s Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (don’t even mess with these new generation shit) can be watched on YouTube. One of my favorites is “The Tale Of Apartment 214″, which is about a girl named Stacy who moves into an apartment with her mother, and befriends an older woman who lives down the hall named Madeline. Every day after school, Stacy visits Madeline for a friendly chat and a cup of tea and cookies. One day, Madeline asks Stacy to be sure to join her on a specific day, as this day is very special to her and she doesn’t want to spend it alone. Stacy promises her friend she will show up. That day, Stacy makes a new friend who invites her to the Battle Of The Bands. Excited about finally meeting someone her own age, she flakes on Madeline…the ending of this episode is very surprising and creepy…

Paul: Bikes vs. Cars…

…this shit needs to end, seriously.

Those of you who live in Portland have probably seen this a dozen times by now, but if you haven’t then take a look so you can be outraged. Last week the driver and cyclist in this video got into some altercation that ended like this:

Fortunately the driver is in jail now, but local news outlets have become obsessed with stirring up shit between cyclists and drivers. I commute about 10 miles each day by bike, and yeah, I do feel a little superior about it for a number of reasons. The media coverage of things like this really does a disservice to everyone. I am sick of hearing drivers interviewed on the news whining about cyclists not stopping for stop signs. It’s not the same as cars doing it, on a bike you have a much fuller range of vision and can also hear whether a person is coming. It’s kind of like jaywalking.

Because a car is so much bigger and can cause so much more damage to a cyclist than the other way around, drivers really do owe a greater duty of care to cyclists. That doesn’t stop people from changing lanes and nearly hitting me as if I’m not there or other stupid shit. Now I have to worry that shoud I give them the finger or yell at them for it they’ll pull some psycho shit like this.

Paul: Ramen Utensil…

…I can’t decide whether this is retarded or genius.

This special spoon-fork combo is specially designed for ramen. It is perfect for twisting up noodles while also ladleing broth. Basically, it’s a glorified spork. It was designed by Masami Takahashi for a Japanese ramen chain restaurant. Here in the states you can buy it from MOMA for $12 a piece, biggest rip off ever! I remeber back in college one of my friends went on a diet that consisted almost exclusively of ramen, mainly because the food there gave everyone IBS. She would have killed for one of these. Beth says she really wants one for christmas, but I have literally never seen her eating ramen.

Speaking of Japanese garbage, I really want a Tamagachi pet. If someone knows where to find one, or if they even make them anymore please leave a comment. I think that it would be the perfect office distraction, especially for places that filter the internet to eliminate all the fun stuff.

Jon: Four Facts….

jonheader.jpg

1.) The aesthetic and cultural mindset of the early 1990′s is without a doubt returning.

2.) Doc Martens shoes are gaining popularity again, largely due to some new design ideas and Kate Moss adopting the style.

3.) Gladiator style shoes are all the rage right now, and appear to be developing into less of a trend piece and more as a new classic.

4.) Guest designers doing capsule collections for lower end brands (think Target’s Go International line, or the upcoming Comme Des Garcons collection at H&M) is the total shit right now…

So…….

What the fuck is up with the hideous love child created by (otherwise excellent designer) Raf Simons and Doc Martens? These aweful shoes are scheduled to be released for Spring 2009, but with the negative reaction they are getting from just about everyone who has seen this preview, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing got scrapped.

Jon: Best drummer ever…

jonheader.jpg

For casual Gaycondettes (that’s what I’m calling all you readers now…), it may be new information that I am a pretty fucking awesome drummer. Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but yeah, it’s true: I’m pretty bad ass… But no, I am not the most bad ass drummer of all time… That title if officially held by Rachel Carns, drummer of one of my favorite metal bands of all time, The Need.

When I was about 17 years old I stole my parents car and went to New York City to see The Need play at Sarah Lawrence College. It was fucking amazing. In my top ten shows of all time for sure… On the way home I got totally lost, and was driving aimlessly on the New Jersey high way system till 5am. I literally became so tired that I began hallucinating and at one point thought I saw Jesus hovering in the road in front of me. No joke.

Of course, I totally got caught by my parents who then grounded me for two months. But was it worth it?

Fuck Yeah.

Watch this amazing video of Rachel playing the song “Dark Sally” from  the Need’s second and last album, aptly titled The Need is Dead,  and prepare to have your brain explode.
