…the gaycondo endorsement.
I can imagine the way many women and African Americans feel that now, for the first time ever, there are viable presidential candidates that look like them. Here in Portland we also have a pretty historic mayoral race going on. The frontrunner is Sam Adams, a City Commissioner who is also a gay man. His main competition, Sho Dozono, is a Japanese American whose family was sent to an internment camp during World War II. In general Portland is a town where overt homophobia is rare, for the most part I can go about my life without fearing rataliation or violence for being who I am. Still, the prospect of a gay mayor is exciting and has an enormous symbolic value.
I hope Adams wins not only because he’s gay (or because he’s a total silver fox), but because he recognizes all the things that make me love Portland. I have heard him speak twice and am amazed by his drive and willingness to take on tough positions when he thinks something is really important. Dozono is endorsed by the current mayor, who is a good guy but has done practically zilch during his 4 years in office. Dozono promises to govern in a similar way. Adams, on the other hand, will work relentlessly to make this city an even better place to live, and I am excited about the changes that will take place under his direction.
