Tragically Un-Heard Of
Band O’ The Week
AGENT RIBBONS

agentribbonsjamesdean.jpg

Listen: “Obituary”

Jon and I often discuss bands that would be in our musical family (where genre/creative postmodern pop music = family blood). In this sort of family dynamic, Agent Ribbons would be our second country cousins once removed but they still come over to family reunions anyways and get drunk off of jug wine and eat cherry pie.

I says it before but I’ll say it again: If you like catchy as all hell, sweet, alto voiced gals singing stories over simply strummed serenades, Agent Ribbons is the band for you. After listening to their debut record, On Time Travel and Romance, my biggest regret in life is that I didn’t go to theater school. If I had, I would’ve adapted the album’s music into a Broadway musical. Take their vagrant Saloon tale found within “Strangers” : ‘When he came to his gun was gone, his shirt was in a twist / Dog tired and hungry with no money the blood boiled in his face / He saw a whore and asked her how he came to have such luck / She said “You don’t look at those hard workin’ women that way when you don’t got a buck” / “I’m sorry miss, I tell ya, but old bastards like me are so hung on living life we don’t meditate on courtesies / So go ahead and shoot me I ain’t got nowhere to go / I’ll have myself a whiskey with the devil down below” / Ain’t it funny how strangers find home in the strangest places’.

Now if that doesn’t scream Broadway musical meets Johnny Cash then I just don’t know what to say to you little reader!

agentribbonslive.jpg

Agent Ribbons have been busy over the past year. They went on a national tour as the opening act for Cake, released a limited edition 7″, the Star Crossed Doppelganger, which features two haunting songs and artwork by Dame Darcy, were photographed for a fashion magazine wearing adorably fancy hats (woven by their friend, Naik Fur), filmed a video at the Dandy Warhol’s Odditorium, went on a mini Bay area tour with Swallows and are already planning their spring outing.

Paul: There’s something about Jodie Foster…

…that really attracts the crazies!

stalker-magnet.jpg

27 years a go yesterday John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assasinate then President Ronald Reagan following a speech at the Washington, D.C. Hilton. Check out the video…

The interesting part of this story is that Hinckley’s logic behind the assassination was that it would be a sort of tribute to Jodie Foster. Hinckley was obsessed with the movie Taxi Driver, and apparently also with Foster’s character, a 12 year old prostitute. In the year leading up to the assassination he sent her numerous creepy letters. At the time she was a student at Yale and he went so far as to enroll in a writing course there to get closer to her. She turned all of his letters over to the University who tried to locate Hinckley but were unsuccessful. He was ulitmately sent to a mental hospital, where he remains today.

Were it left at that, it might just be a strange and funny story. Reagan was shot but not badly hurt. The famous Brady Bill gun-control law was named after White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was wounded in the incident.

It turns out, however, that Hinckley was not Foster’s only stalker. Michael Smegal, a 42 year old Massachusetts resident was charged for bomb threats earlier this month in U.S. District Court. For the past several years Smegal has been stalking Jodie Foster and sending her threatening letters. He also mailed out hundreds of identical letters as bomb threats to airports, celebrities, and business executives. All of these letters mentioned Foster’s name.

Gay people often are critical of Foster for her silence about her private life and her decision not to officially come out of the closet. Now that I know that she’s had this stalker out there I can’t say that I blame her. She and her partner Cydney have been together for 14 years and the couple have two children together, yet the family is practically never photographed together. If I were her I’d want to keep my family life as private as possible regardless of my sexual orientation.

Perhaps there is something about strong, no b.s. women such as Foster that makes these men go crazy. I am glad that she can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that this second stalker is behind bars. I wouldn’t mind seeing a made-for-tv movie about it, though.

She reminds me of Darlene from Roseanne in this video. I miss the way she used to rock, she’s gone all soft lately. You have to give her credit, I bet this only cost around 50 bucks…

Paul: Brangelina off the shit-list…

…for now anyway.

neever-mind.jpg

It turns out that last story about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie getting married was not actually true. I retract what I said (except the part about hoping their kids are gay) and apologize for doubting them. I will asssume they are serious about their solidarity with us gays, until their actions prove otherwise.

p.s. they’re still kind of hot. I’d do them….

Paul: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are liars…

…I hope their marriage ends in death and misery - and that all their kids are gay.

liars.jpg

I don’t know if anyone else remembers this, but 2 years a go Jolie and Pitt very publicly vowed not to legally marry until gays and lesbians could also. Well, I remember and if you need your memory jogged check out this article from the Advocate. Unfortunately, it looks like they were full of shit! Apparently the two were married today in New Orleans, which I guess is one of their home-bases these days. In Louisiana not only can’t homos get married, there’s a constitutional amendment specifically banning it as well as civil unions or any similar recognition for gay couples.

You can’t really say that things are different for them now becuase of the kids, because they had all those kids back when they publicly pledged to wait with us queer folk. Besides, plenty of homos have kids too, and they still can’t get married. It shows a definate lack of integrity. I wonder if they just didn’t want to get married and said that so the press would leave them alone or so everyone would think they were soooo noble. If you make a pledge like that it’s a really shitty thing to do to break it, right?

Just so you know, Brangelina, we didn’t forget what you said and you’re officially on the shit list.

p.s. You’re not all that attractive anymore anyway….

fall-calvin.jpgfall-gucci.jpgWith the exception of a handful of labels such as Etro (pictured above), the upcoming fall season looks like it is going to be a a big yawn for menswear. Most of the uninspiring designers fall into one of two camps.

The first of the two is focusing on sporty and minimalist knits and synthetics (see Figure A, which is screaming  shitty mid 90’s). The second camp of designers are recycling the whole boho/tech/gypsy thing (see Figure B), which, admittedly was interesting when Balenciaga did it for women a year ago. However now it just feels tired and contrived.

Lucky for us, Etro has put together what it maybe my favorite collection for the fall. It is fun and adventurous without sacrificing wearability. My favorite Etro look of the four pictured above is the bottom left.  Now if I could only scrounge up an extra $2000 dollars….

Jon: Suzanne Opton’s “Soldier”…

jonheader.jpg

…looking into the eyes of those who have seen the unforgettable.

Soldier Morris

“We all experience strategic moments when we feel most alive. These are the moments we will always remember, be they transcendant or horrific. After all, what are we if not our collection of memories? In making these portraits of soldiers, I simply wanted to look in the face of someone who’d seen something unforgettable.”  -Suzanne Opton

Soldier Birkholz Soldier Claxton Soldier Dougherty

(click thumbnails for larger image)

In part one of her 2006 series, Soldier, artists Suzanne Opton photographed portraits of soldiers who had recently returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Each of these photographs captures a similiar image: the head of the subject lying passively on it’s side, cropped in such a way as to eliminate any contextualization (be it their body or surroundings). The soldiers are harshly lit from above by strong white light, perhaps hinting at some sort of divine transcendence.

When initially seeing these images, one of the first thoughts of the viewer is how vulnerable and passive each of the figures seem. The subjects of Opton’s images appear to be sleeping or perhaps even dead. Given the cultural wartime context these pieces were created in, this asthetic is suprisingly jarring.

Opton has taken an extremely violent contextual inspiration and transformed it into something that in the end is actually quite calming and peaceful. By cropping out any presence of a military uniform in these portraits, it is as though Opton is challenging the viewers projected identity (aggresive/violent) of the soldiers. She has transformed them, or rather returned them, to the state of simply being people.

Whether Suzanne Opton’s art is meant to be a supportive pro-soldier statement, or a strong critique of military violence is left up to the viewer to decide.

Paul: Bikes are the ultimate fashion accessory…

…look good while saving the environment.
For those of you who don’t know, Portland is a bike town. Cyclists come in all ages and from all walks of life, but there are a number of people who still have negative connotations with cycling because of this old stereotype:

douche1.jpg

What a Douche, right?

Fortunately people are starting to figure out that you can ride your bike in (gasp!)… your normal clothes!!! You can ride to work without getting decked out in full gear like you’re about to ride the Tour de France. Fortunately style icons like Chloe Sevigny have been spotted riding their bikes around Manhattan, showing the world that bikes are sexy. Here’s Chloe on her folding ladies’ bike, notice how the frame is slanted so that you can ride in a skirt:

bikefashion_chloe.jpg

The fact that the bike folds makes it ideal for a New Yorker since you can easily stuff it in a closet if you live in an apartment with limited space. According to NYC Streetsblog:

“Alex Marshall at the Regional Plan Association notes that we could be looking at a positive trend if, in fact, ‘women are feeling comfortable enough to cycle in nice clothes and without helmets.’ Marshall says, ‘It almost compares to the way conduct and attitudes in the subway shifted dramatically a decade or so ago.’”

I don’t know about the whole no helmet thing, I suppose it’s a personal choice but it hardly seems like something transportation planners should be promoting. I guess if you require helmets it suggests to people that cycling is very dangerous, which would discourage people from doing it. Chloe Sevigny is talking on the phone while riding, and that is definately a dumb idea.

Another stupid thing to do on a bike is to Zoobomb. For those of you not in Portland let me translate: Grown adults take their mini-bikes on the light rail to the Zoo station, which is inside a tunnel through a hill. You take a long elevator ride up to the top of the hill and then ride down it as fast as possible, barreling through stop signs and traffic lights into downtown Portland. You then get back on the train and do it again. Here’s a video to show you what it’s like:

Now that it’s spring here in Portland and it’s not raining every single day, I try to bike as much as possible. All my life I’ve had these twiggy little chicken legs, but by the end of this summer I want to have shapely, burly ones. Check out this guy’s hot-legs… I know I was down on spandex bike shorts before, but I think he’s earned the right to wear them:

Paul: Carnie Wilson’s battle with weight continues…

…girl, just love your fat ass already!

carnie-wilson-weight-war.jpg

After her very public gastric bypass back in 2000 Carnie Wilson has gained all that weight back. The ex-singer says:

“I’ve never lied or been dishonest about what’s going on in my life. Even all these years later, having had such a great weight-loss story, being back in this place is so familiar. And it hurts. I don’t want to feel this way anymore. It doesn’t feel good when you have to struggle to get your pants on.”

I kind of feel bad for her, but at the same time you have to ask yourself, “If drastic, invasive surgery didn’t work, maybe I’m just supposed to be fat.” I wouldn’t know anything about that since I have the metabolism of an 8 year-old, but I think it’s good to appreciate your natural body no matter how it is. The sad part is that at this point, her whole career is based on her being either fat or not fat - Wilson Phillips are a distant-ass memory. Honestly, the best thing she could do for herself right now is to get fat again.

I’m inspired by guest-blogger Nickey’s brilliant post about Chunky Pam further down the page, I think Carnie can revive her career without whoring herself out to Trimspa or Jenny Craig. Sure she lost 150 pounds, but she was still kind of ugly in the face. Back in the day they would strech out the film and hide her behind giant rocks to make her look skinny in Wilson Phillips videos, so it’s no wonder she has a complex about her weight, but psycho diets and surgery aren’t the answer. There are as many fugly skinny people and hot fat people out there, what makes a person sexy is largely about confidence and self-esteem.

Carnie, if you wants to be famous again you should just put out a damn record - you’re not agoing to be a role model for fat people by obsessing overyour weight and feeling bad about yourself. You’re a fat girl and you need to just embrace it and love yourself. If you want to do something really revolutionary, make a workout video to help other people get healthy - without talking about losing wieght.

KEEP IT ON THE BROWNLOWE: Mini Life…Tragically UnHeard Of.

emBrownlowe

We all know the US Economy is suffering…. When Europeans come to visit US it is like they are experiencing the best sale of all time…. I have an insatiable passion for playing music but “living the dream” and going on tour is getting unrealistic with today’s gas prices….

I think I have totally effed my musical karma.

minilifecomic.jpg

Confession time: I rarely buy CDs….from well known or indie artists. Usually, I trade music with my friends, listen to bands on Myspace or barter my own CD to get a disc from a friend’s band. Occasionally, I will see a live show, not know the person and buy the CD…or perhaps i have an insatiable instant gratification yearning and NEED to download a guilty pleasure pop song or a rare, remixed b-side NOW NOW NOW from Itunes…

However, the last time I purchased something from I-Tunes I was disappointed because the format they sell in cannot be transferred into a more recognized format such as .aiff, .wav or .mp3. This made it really difficult to fully enjoy because even though I purchased the music, I didn’t feel like I “owned” it.

In November of 2007, my band, Swallows, played a HUGE show at a local women’s music festival. The venue was packed and while we performed there were at least 50 people standing up front, dancing, pounding the stage, cheering…obviously into the music. I even led them in a group clap to keep the beat to a song in hopes of destroying the barriers between audience and performer. This was one of the most exciting examples of audience participation I had experienced in my performing career.

We even announced we had pre-release copies of our new EP, Cloud Machines, specially for the occasion. However, at the end of the night, not one person bought any music. Instead we sold some t-shirts and Swallows necklaces….This confuses me. Why would people who are SO into the MUSIC not want to BUY the music so they can LISTEN to it? Why do apparel items like shirts and necklaces sell prior to our performance?. (I must say, Swallows does have very stylish designs but isn’t it supposed to be about the MUSIC?)

These repeated experiences disturb me. I consider my band, and myself, to be recording artists and it troubles me that people aren’t buying music at shows…even after a stellar live performance where the audience is clearly enjoying themselves. My favorite part of being a musician is creating a sonically profound audio recording…fully realizing my creative potential on record. After a successful show on the road, many people come to us with positive attitudes saying we were the most creative, full sounding rock duo they’ve ever seen live. Often these people either buy a T-Shirt or walk away empty handed.

I think the music culture is starting to fully transform into the digital realm (with the exception of vinyl). The world has too much STUFF….too much plastic…too much paper…both of which are needed to create CDs… I-pods are upgraded so quick I am bummed for spending hard earned $$$ on a model that is going to be outdated 6 months later…but i still use it daily. With constant digital upgrades in I-Tunes I feel as if I am being subconsciously told that the public is ready for a digital revamp of music. Other digital .mp3 players are becoming affordable for all music lovers. I haven’t seen someone use a portable CD player or Walkman in years.

“I-Pods have become synonymous with music - and if I filled my shiny new 160gb iPod up legally, buying each track online at the 99 cents price that the industry has determined, it would cost me about $32,226. How does that make sense?” - demonbaby (<–read more)

Even mainstream music gurus like Radiohead and Beck are embracing the digital music sharing revolution and either letting fans set their own price to download their albums or having fixed priced digital albums featuring audience collaborative artwork or giving them the bare tracks to make their own remixes.

Embracing digital accessibility for music will also save independent bands, musicians and their labels hundreds of dollars in production costs.

Think about it: if you choose to release an album digitally you still get to share your music + artwork without having to dish out the dough to have physical copies made. Instead, you can focus extra money on something else to help your band or different forms of merchandise (ie: t-shirts, screen printed posters, new equipment, etc). Plus you will be saving the environment by not over polluting this Earth with excess product, paper and plastic. (However, if you are still interested in having a quality CD made for short runs without breaking the bank: kunaki is worth looking into.

All of these reasons are why I am so glad there is an outlet like MINI LIFE who is dedicated to creating a friendly and generous bridge between the artist and their fans/music lovers. I am really excited and proud to be apart of the revolution MINI LIFE is creating.

minilife.gif

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

What is the digital musical revolution, MINI LIFE, all about? It’s creator, Carlos Onawa Rodela, has the answers:
carlos1.jpg
In a nutshell, what is Mini Life? Why did you choose the name Mini Life?

a. MINI LIFE is a website dedicated to promoting artists, while also delivering unique digital content to fans - directly from the artists themselves.

b. the name MINI LIFE actually came from an old artist name of mine, but then it morphed into another meaning with the company. basically all creation starts off as something small (MINI) and then is released to the world and grows, etc. Everyone has their own ‘MINI LIFE’…and our site helps the artists deliver that vision to the world.

The ways people hear and acquire music is definitely changing. What are some of the changes you have seen in the music industry that inspired you to start Mini Life?.

Well, the music business is failing. and it caused it’s own failure…but technology helped change the playing field as well.
and this isn’t the first time it’s done that, at all. The last time was with movable print/ and the creation of a quick and efficient way to ‘reproduce or share’ the written word.

We are in another time where we can ‘reproduce or share’ music and film (and other media) and we should embrace it. Not run away, calling out ‘pirates’ and filing lawsuits.

The advent of the internet and digital media wields an amazing potential to connect people with stuff they love, and more importantly..stuff they ‘didn’t know they loved’. Once people love stuff, they tend to support it.

Let me say here, that those who don’t support stuff they love (and get for free) are, 1. poor (college students or other wise) 2. are not going to pay bloody 14.99 - 16.99 for a CD for 2 songs they like on it — and for something that DOES NOT COST 14.99 - 16.99 to produce 3. are bleeding fed up with the record business and its old-school ways of throwing money around (internally), looking for ‘hits’ and giving two shits about the music itself (excluding rad small labels), and generally being conservative out of touch wankers.

How does a band get “signed” to Mini Life? What are the expectations between Mini Life and the artist?

For the beta (prelaunch), I’m finding the artists myself, or having artists referred to me from friends, or other artists. In the future, the site will be open to everyone. Their is no expectation on the part of MINI LIFE, in regards to how ‘well’ the artists do selling their content, or climbing the ladder of success. We WANT them to succeed and help them in a variety of ways, but there is no demands or needs from MINI LIFE. We are unlike the old record labels in almost every way. We aren’t in the business of ‘making the numbers’ and selling a certain number of albums/subscriptions. We function and exist to empower and promote the artist.

Why do you think giving music away for free is useful in today’s music economy?

The free to cost model is the way of the future, but it’s also the way of the present. Let me start off by saying - people want to listen to (fully…not a 30 second sample) music or watch movies and ‘then’ decide if they like it or not. This first listening or watching of content is key. It is everything. How can you decide if you like a whole album if someone is charging you 17.99 to find out, especially when true lovers of music want to learn about, and spread the word on — ALOT of music…not just what they can afford (with inflated costs).

Give consumers the opportunity to know/listen/and try out all sorts of new stuff, they will then tell their friends, and become fans of more and more content…not having a cost chained to their experience…. and seriously…Mr. and Mrs. internet retailers…how can anyone base their purchasing decisions on 30 second samples?

carlos3.jpg

As for the free model working today, in present, just look at any torrent site. File sharing happens, and is NOT going away. It is also helping turn people on to all sorts of new music that they wouldn’t have know about, ever. Millions upon millions of people file share, and they do it because they are hungry for content…hungrier now, that they’ve tried out albums, and movies and become ‘fans’ of the artists content. Also, the Radiohead and NIN digital experiments showed us fans want to support the artists that they love, even when they get free content. More so..sometimes…because now the fan becomes a super-fan and trusts the artist. Now, the way fans support artists are by buying t-shirts, going to shows, buying dvds and getting their friends to go to the shows with them. MINI LIFE helps ‘make’ fans, and then allows the artists to make income from all these avenues–that their new fans fulfill, and MINI LIFE offers these same artists 90% of their digital sales, supporting the creation of these profitable avenues.

Eventually, you will have an artist subscription service where fans will pay a standard rate to get up to date features on Mini Life bands. How will this work?

The subscription service is something were very excited about. It will basically work like this:

1. a person goes to our site- finds some band (filmmaker, etc) and watches some videos, maybe a documentary on the band, and downloads their album and some demos, and maybe their latest music video - and realizes that he/she really likes this artist.

2. this person comes back to the site and clicks the subscription button for that artist. the subscriptions should cost around 3-5 bucks per month (deals for bi-monthly and yearly rates).

3. once the new fan is subscribed and has payed his or her 3-5 dollars (which 90% of goes directly to the artist) they can login and access the ‘FULL’ artist page. this page has potentially the artists newest album (no release date issues here..when an album done - its on the site), a new making-of video, some live tracks and b-sides, and maybe some live video of a show -when the band was in town (and the fan missed the show for a variety of reasons /cost/timing/long lines/etc).

4. Another cool feature of being a subscriber, is the fans get reminders (of show dates, album release dates, etc)–keeping the fans more in touch with their favorite artists - while ALSO delivering this content to them. How many shows have you missed because you didn’t even know your fav band was in town. a lot i’m betting.
carlos2.jpg
So the subscription is a direct link from fan to artist and artist to fan. The fan gets some free content to decide if he/she actually likes the artist and then the fan can support the artist for as long as he/she chooses…as long as they pay a monthly subscription fee they get access to that artists work -in full….and then some.

oh and the full artist page will function alike an all you can eat buffet — no limits to your downloads or viewing privileges. just get in and download till your hearts content.

What sort of responsibilities will the artist have in order to get paid for the subscription service?.

The responsibilities the artist has who wants to enter into this subscription model is this - provide digital content for fans to download/stream - for the duration of time you want subscribers. The details are still being worked out-but when we launch with it all the info will be provided. In short, the artists will be responsible for their own subscription success. By offering a lot of really cool stuff and more people will be into supporting you via subscription.

“In the end, we are super excited to support a site that truly cares about having creation meet the fans and to develop a true cycle that allows for those who create to keep creating.”

Guest Blogger Nickey: Chunky Pam….

nickeyheader.jpg

….is not so chunky after all.

Chunky PamThe first time I saw a Chunky Pam video I thought “holy crap, who is this hot chubster rapping on the internets!?” She was a viral phenom, and the songs are really catchy. The first two videos were produced as MTV promos (one for Christmas, one for Valentine’s Day). They have insanely high production values, including sexy male backup dancers and blinged out junk food. The third video, which appeared last summer, seems a lot more DIY. It’s called Dirty Jerzy, and all members of Gay Condo love it, especially Jon(who grew up there).
However, once I actually paid attention to what Chunky Pam was singing about, I was kind of offended. In “Merry XXXLMas” and “Pampered” she mostly raps about how much she loves to eat junk food. We so rarely see fat women sexualized in our culture, I like Chunky Pam just because she’s undeniably hot while being unabashedly fat. But, then, she also falls into the same old traps that most other media about fat peopledoes- she’s the butt of a joke about how much fat people love to eat. Dirty Jerzy is really just about New Jersey, though, and when I pointed out to Jon that Pam is eating a huge meal in a diner during the video he said “But that’s what everyone does in New Jersey!”
Geremy and MeredithThe strangest thing about Pam, though, is that she isn’t real. The actress that plays her is Ashlie Atkinson, a member of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby. She’s been on Rescue Me, had a pilot on Showtime, and appeared in a fat suit (!!) in an Off-Broadway play called Fat Pig. In an interview in AmaZe Magazine she talks about only wanting to play positive fat roles, so I guess she feels ok about Chunky Pam’s love of milkshakes.
The other two people behind Chunky Pam are Geremy Jasper, the slim, male lead singer of The Fever, a mediocre New York indie-rock band and Meredith DiMenna, lead singer of Saint Bernadette. Meredith is the voice behind Pam and Geremy wrote the lyrics. Knowing a skinny man and an average sized woman are the reality behind Pam, it definitely makes me love her less. America seriously needs more fat babes.  Only a jerky bro could say Pam isn’t hot. Even if you’re not into fat, she’s still one very attractive lady.

Too bad the most famous fat babe of the past year was actually a joke created by thin people.
